Smart Supply Chain in an Uncertain World – The Past, the Present, and the Future

The World Trade Organization has created a flatter trade spectrum for more than 20 years, but the recent Brexit issue and the on-going commerce war between the U.S. and China have brought uncertainty to international trade, and such uncertainty connotes risks affecting enterprises’ supply chain strategy and deployment. Occasional large-scale natural disasters such as strong earthquakes, powerful typhoons, and serious floods call for humanitarian logistics to promptly and efficiently collect and distribute precious goods to effected areas. Furthermore, climate change has made these disasters even more profound and serious, thereby placing businesses in an uncertain sustainability and assert their supply chains’ coordination. Recent ICT developments in areas like IoT, VR/AR, AI, block-chains, etc. are contributing to new business models and performance improvement, which subsequently lead to the growth of smart supply chains. In the retailing and distribution contexts, an omni-channel directs the change and seamless integration of online-to-offline (O2O) commerce. Innovation in business models and ICT applications also relates to the area of unproven solutions and generally creates high stakes under business uncertainty.
The theme of ICLS 2019 is smart supply chain in an uncertain world. The challenging issues that companies face are plentiful – some are traditional and some are emerging and uncertain. Uncertainty may come from the volatile global trade environment or result from the impacts of extreme weather caused by climate change. Innovation through new ICT can help lessen the problems arising from such uncertain business environments and engender a supply chain strategy and operations with new business models and technology. The future comes with higher uncertainty, but it is shaping newer, smarter, more innovative, and more adaptive supply chains of tomorrow.

It is our pleasure to invite scholars and practitioners around the world to participate in this uniquely-themed 14th International Conference of Logistics and SCM systems (ICLS 2019) to be held August 19–22, 2019 in Taipei, Taiwan.
